Colour

Yellow pigments (urochrome) in urine are not the only reason urine stains look yellow. Over time the bacteria feeding on the urine (uric acid) produce the distinctive ammonia smell through metabolism. The alkalinity of these metabolites can cause yellow staining in two other ways.

Firstly, is by mobilising dye pigments in Jute backed carpets that then wick to the fibre surface causing a dye stain. Alkaline cleaning products can also quickly cause this Jute dye transfer to the fibre surface. Again this yellow/browning is generally very easy to remove.

The second major cause of urine yellowing is bleaching of the original carpet dyes from excessive or long term alkalinity. The blue and red portions of carpet dyes are affected first, leaving the yellow dyes largely intact. Our guaranteed colour repair service is the perfect answer to these stains.

Besides urine, the other most common permanent stain contains acid based dyes. These are, in fact, the type of dye that is used to dye most carpets. If you want to confirm exactly whether your stain requires colour repair, just send us a photo!

Terms & Conditions

Permanent stains are considered “damaged carpet” and as such normally require replacement to fix. Therefore we accept no responsibility for any further damage that may develop while attempting to save the damaged carpet.

One example is a pot plant stain that has weakened fibres from dry rot. Our Colour Repair charge will be refunded if we could not achieve our 95% visual improvement promise. We will not be responsible for any further cost or liability. You are required to accept these conditions prior to work commencing.

“Guaranteed Removal” Definition

Our aim is perfection but we do not promise it. Full replacement is recommended if you require a promise of “brand new”.

Our promise for guaranteed removal is a 95% reduction in the appearance of the stain. This could mean a slight difference in colour or shade than the surrounding carpet. Before and after photos can be measured for colour reduction. If not perfect, it will be so subtle it will not show in a photo and will no longer “draw the eye”.

For multiple Colour Repairs in a room, our guarantee is 95% reduction in the overall staining rather than for each stain. This makes larger jobs more cost effective to save.

Odour

Again the breakdown of uric acid to ammonia and carbon dioxide is the principle source of odour in urine stains. It is accelerated on hot humid days as heat and moisture make an ideal environment for the bacteria to proliferate.

Vinegar is sometimes suggested as a cure to pet odour. This is simply not going to work once the vinegar dries. The acetic acid in vinegar can neutralise ammonia to its acetate salt but not uric acid. The uric acid will continue to be metabolised into ammonia in a continual process.

Dealing with urine successfully will require sufficient neutralising of both acidic and alkaline components. Our treatments also include an oxidation step as well as a bio-enzymatic process which both aid in the complete breakdown of the urine deposits.

Lastly it is important to understand that a pet stain can be much like the tip of an ice berg. It is very common for a pet to return to the same spot out of habit. Often the owner might not even realise it is happening repeatedly. So a small visual stain could be 5, 10 or even 20 times bigger in the underlay below the carpet. The urine can also soak into floorboards and concrete floors too.

We can offer a written conditional guarantee with urine odour removal and remember the sooner you act, the more cost effective it is to fix.

Do you Steam Clean with a Hot Water Extractor?

Yes, we have used Steam Cleaning ever since 2012! We can still offer this in most areas but have started to phase this method out, you will need to request this when booking.

What should we try ourselves?

Many products will damage wool carpet and make the stains worse. The best way is gently scrap up stain with a spoon if there is substance. Next, wet a towel and wring it out so it is barely wet. Now stand on the stain with pressure to absorb it into the towel. Do not rub natural delicate fibres. Do not wet stain directly as this will push some down below the carpet. If you use chemicals, use only a tiny amount and stop immediately if it’s not working.

Do you guarantee stains?

Check out our awesome Colour Repair Service for guaranteed removal of any permanent stain.

How often should you clean?

Low traffic household should be every 12-18 months but a heavy traffic household with pet accidents will benefit from 3–6-month intervals.

Our carpet cleaner failed; do you guarantee removal?

Yes, we can provide a guaranteed option for both stains and odours.

Do you use chemicals?

Every single carpet cleaner on the planet does, In fact, water itself is a chemical. Our cleaning solution is 100% made from plant extracts and minerals and dries to the same pH as our skin. Humans easily process these ingredients, so skin contact is never a concern. There are some really nasty cleaners with hydroxides, butyls and 1000’s of other nasty chemicals. It is great that consumers are becoming aware of these problems.

Does cleaning remove protective wool lanolins?

No, oils are removed from modern wool carpets.

How long does the carpet need to dry?

Carpets are dry enough to use straight away. It takes 1-4 hours for them to feel dry.

Do you do dry cleaning?

Yes, our modern Very Low Moisture System has become our primary method for restorative deep cleaning.

What are the main benefits of your cleaning system?

Rotary extraction is more efficient for releasing soil and stains. This means a lot less moisture is needed so no chance of mould, mildew or slow drying. We apply a soil protector that slows re-soiling and keeps your carpet clean for longer. Our company has been designing stain products in NZ for 11 years, our 2023 range has just been released and it continues to do things that were previously thought impossible.

Our carpet is bleached, can you help?

Yes, we can fix this with our colour repair.

Do I need to start an insurance claim?

No. We can provide guaranteed removal, usually for much less than your excess. It can be a long wait on the phone, it is better to find out our quote to compare and then decide.

Does carpet cleaning age your carpet?

No. Quite the opposite. Carpet manufacturers stipulate that professional cleaning done correctly will slow down the wearing process by removing abrasive soils.
